Security & Screening
Busselton Margaret River Airport is a security‑controlled airport, which means safety screening is part of your journey through the terminal.
Security requirements at Australian airports are set by the Australian Government. All passengers and visitors entering secure areas, along with their belongings, must pass through security screening.
Allowing a little extra time and knowing what to expect before you arrive will help ensure a smooth and efficient screening process.
When security screening applies
You will be screened if you:
- Are travelling on flights to Melbourne or Sydney
- Are entering the departure lounge with a departing passenger
What to expect at screening
Security screening may include:
- Passing through a body scanner
- Carry‑on items being screened by x‑ray
- Random testing of passengers and baggage for traces of explosives using Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) equipment
Selection for additional testing is made using an electronic random system. No profiling is used.
In some cases, you may be required to undergo a secondary pat‑down search. This can be conducted in a private room at your request.
If you are unable to pass through the metal detector or have concerns about the process, please speak with a security officer at the screening point — they are there to help.
Important to know
- Refusing any part of the screening process means you will not be permitted to enter secure areas or board your flight.
- Detection dogs may operate within the arrivals terminal as part of routine security measures.
Safe Travel Reminders
Face masks
Mask wearing is not mandatory within the terminal or onboard aircraft. Passengers are welcome to wear a mask if they choose to do so.
Unattended baggage
Items such as luggage, boxes or bags must not be left unattended anywhere in the airport.
Any unattended item will be treated as suspicious and should be reported immediately to airport staff or security.
To help identify your baggage easily, ensure your name and destination are clearly labelled. Airline baggage tags are available in the departure terminal.
Dangerous goods
Some items are classified as dangerous goods and are not permitted onboard aircraft.
Requirements can vary by airline, so we recommend checking directly with your airline before travelling.
Inappropriate comments and behaviour
Any comment or joke relating to weapons, explosives or threats — even if said in jest — is taken seriously and may result in refusal to travel or further action.
Intoxicated or abusive behaviour
Passengers who appear intoxicated, behave aggressively or cause disruption may be refused boarding or removed from an aircraft for the safety of all travellers and staff.
